Spybot - Search &
Destroy (often
Spybot-S&D) is a popular malware, spyware and adware removal program which works on Microsoft Windows 95 and later. Like most malware scanners, Spybot-S&D scans the computer
hard disk and/or RAM for
malicious software.
Spybot was written by
German software engineer Patrick Michael Kolla, and is distributed by Kolla's Irish company
Safer Networking
Limited. Development began in
2000 when Kolla, still
a student, wrote a small program to deal with the
Aureate/Radiate and Conducent TimeSink programs, two
of the earliest examples of
adware. |
Spybot features
Spybot can fix problems with
tracking cookies,
system internals (Registry), Winsock LSPs,
ActiveX objects, browser hijackers, BHOs, and
can to some extent protect a user's privacy, by deleting
usage tracks. Spybot also includes an "Immunize" feature to
block the installation of spyware before it occurs. Another
tool included in Spybot is a file shredder, for the secure
deletion of files. Spybot is not intended to replace
anti-virus programs, but it does detect some common trojans and keyloggers.
A Tea-Timer module can be
optionally enabled, which provides a level of active, real-time
protection from undesirable registry changes and such; it is
unusual for such a feature to be offered as part of a free
anti-spyware program.
As some programs that ship with
attached spyware or adware will refuse to run should the unwelcome
co-programs be removed, later versions of Spybot allow it to
replace the spyware binaries with inert dummies (designed to fool
those programs which insist on the spyware's presence).
In order to efficiently detect
recently created programs, Kolla regularly releases detection
updates along with help improvements, new languages, and
better heuristics algorithms. These updates are downloaded from within the
software from a variety of mirrors and are then automatically
installed.
Spybot is available for all
versions of Windows from Windows 95,
and offers more than two dozen different languages and
several skins to users. Instructions are available on the
website so users can design their own skins.
Support is currently supplied by
means of Internet forums and support e-mails (with a response time of usually no more than 24
hours).

Spybot has been applauded for its
ease of use and installation, free support and updates, ability to
undo every step, and its excellent featureset. Spybot has won
numerous awards, including the PC World Best Buy and World Class 2003 Awards, the PC Magazine Editors Choice and PC User Top
Buy #1. Spybot has also been recommended by CNet, ZDNet,
the Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, MSNBC, CNN and other
reviewers.
Miscellaneous
In the Spybot license, Kolla
dedicates Spybot to "the most wonderful girl on earth." Many
believe that she is Kolla's girlfriend, but the title actually goes
to one of his closest friends, who does not return Kolla's love, as
mentioned in the help file (a case of unrequited love).
Many people have made Spybot
'clones' using exactly the same detection database, and sometimes
the same User Interface, simply changing the name of the program
(and the donation link) to claim credit for it. Some clones have
been made by spyware manufacturers to make programs that pose as
anti-spyware programs, but actually install spyware themselves.
Kolla takes legal action against the people who make these

Spybot Search & Destroy is an anti-spyware
program that quickly identifies and removes intrusive and unwanted
programs that slow down PC system functions as well as compromise
user privacy.
Available as a free download from the Team Spybot Web site, the
program steps apart from the pack by giving users the option of
immunizing their PCs to prevent spyware infestations from happening
in the first place.
Features
The customizable Spybot Search and
Destroy interface is intuitively simple to operate
with minimal muss or fuss. Merely click on the requisite icon in

Unlike other anti-spyware programs, which can take a very long
time to scan through each and every file that resides on a PC,
Spybot is able to scan a PC in just a few minutes by focusing on
specific places where unwanted spyware programs are most likely to
infect the hard drive. Once the scanning process has been
completed, potential spyware threats are listed in the program's
search and destroy window in red. Users select the individual
threat entries that they want to fix and then click on the "fix
selected programs" button to remove the threats from their PCs.
Performance
Team Spybot deserves kudos for equipping its anti-spyware
program with an advanced mode that incorporates a wide variety of
customization options for experienced PC users. In this respect
alone, the program is a must for anyone who is serious about
threshing today's more obnoxious spyware proponents. Advanced
options include the ability to exclude certain PC files from being
scanned, changing which categories of threats that are to be
searched for, identify specific cookies that should be ignored
during the scan, as well as the scheduling of Spybot's search and
destroy missions.
Spybot also features a very cool "immunize" control that enables
the program to reject certain types of recognized spyware programs
before they can even gain a toehold on the PC's hard drive, which
gives it a leg up over competing anti-spyware programs such as
Ad-Aware. For example, the program can be set to permanently block
more than 11,000 previously identified bad addresses in Internet
Explorer, which is one of the really great, and effective, features
of this program. However, end-users also have the option of being
asked for blocking conformation each time Internet Explorer
encounters a potentially bad address.
The Verdict
With Spybot Search and Destroy, PC users concerned about
security  have an excellent, no-cost and no
risk opportunity to secure previously unprotected systems or
find out whether an existing anti-spyware setup really does
catch all the bugs. For example, I was totally surprised to
find that Spybot Search & Destroy quickly identified 23
spyware files on my laptop that had somehow slipped under the
radar screen of the Ad-Aware anti-spyware program I had been
running.
Still, I continued to be concerned that Spybot's more restricted
approach to scanning for spyware might allow certain types of
spyware to penetrate my PC's security perimeter. So after two weeks
of running Spybot exclusively, I reinstalled Ad-aware and ran a
complete system scan. The results showed that Ad-aware likewise was
able to identify a few spyware files that had indeed slipped
through the cracks.
The truth is that no single anti-spyware program can provide
100-percent protection. But Spybot represents a healthy first
protective step, one that also can be used in tandem with other
applications such as Ad-Aware to keep spyware infestations on your
PC to a minimum.

Specs: Spybot Search & Destroy will run on Windows platforms
from ME to XP, but is not available in versions for Mac OS X or
Linux. Disk space requirement: 4.8 MB.
Pros: Quickly and unobtrusively scans for spyware infestations;
gives users the option of immunizing their PCs to prevent spyware
infestations from happening in the first place; includes a wide
variety of advanced tools and settings.
Cons: Some spyware programs continue to slip through Spybot's
defenses, but no anti-spyware offering is 100 percent effective.
The only real downside to this program is that it is not
preinstalled on every PC.
Verdict: Given that the Spybot is free, computer users concerned
about security issues have an excellent, no-cost and no-risk
opportunity to protect a new PC, as well as see whether any
previously installed anti-spyware program really is catching all
the bugs.
